
Workshops & Classes
10 Fold Projects hosts numerous workshops throughout the year. Most of the workshops and classes are either one day or weekend long intensives in the areas of painting (watercolor, oil, and acrylic), printmaking (relief, intaglio, and screen print), mixed media, bookbinding, and fibers (weaving, dyeing, spinning, felting, surface design, sewn construction).
Colored Pencil Techniques Workshop

Have you ever wanted to make your colored pencil drawings come to life? Join me in applying a variety of techniques while we draw a still life of lucious apples! This is a fun medium that is easy to pick up and take your mind off things for a short spell or get wrapped up for an afternoon. It is a portable medium that doesn’t take up a lot of space and allows you to adapt techniques that fit your taste and comfort level. Registrants will receive a list of supplies to bring to class.

Intro to Relief Printing

Learn the basics of relief linoleum printing. Ideal for beginners-no experience necessary! Participants will be able to experiment with a variety of types of chisels and how to make different lines to produce a variety of values and shapes. Each participant will be able to print a final work and will have access to additional open studio hours to make more prints after they take this introductory class.
Workshop fee includes basic materials including one lino block, several sheets of paper, and access to chisels. Participants may purchase additional materials onsite.

Introduction to Shibori Dyeing

Shibori dyeing is a Japanese form of tie-dyeing, usually involving indigo. Participants will learn the history of indigo, how to prepare a specific type of indigo dye, and maintain an indigo vat along with various shibori techniques.
Participants are encouraged to bring other undyed 100% cotton, wool, linen, or silk fabrics. Participants may also purchase a sample set of fabrics that include muslin, cotton sheeting, wool, and silk noil. Attend one or all three sessions. Each session will include the same information and allow ample time for participants to complete a variety of samples.

Floral Watercolor Painting Workshop

Spend the afternoon painting large purple iris blooms against a variegated background of greens, yellows, and purples! You’ll learn a variety of techniques as we carefully fill in the background wash with color while preserving the foreground for the flowers. Then we’ll work wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry as we build layers to create beautiful blooms. This painting will be 8x10 so we can complete everything in this single session. We’ll work on stretched 140 lb. Arches cold-pressed watercolor paper that will be prepared for you ahead of time. Registrants will receive a list of supplies to bring to class.

Weaving Explorations

Interested in learning to weave? Don't know where to begin? Then, this class is for you! Try out a variety of looms including a pin loom, an inkle loom, a tapestry loom, and a multi-harness loom. Play with different types of fibers and materials. Learn the basics of woven structures and discover what loom is best for you. Offering two identical sessions, the first session will take place at Compound Yellow in Oak Park, IL and the second session will take place at 10 Fold Projects in Greencastle, IN. Cost includes all materials. Looms are available for purchase.

Natural Dye Retreat

Ever wanted to know more about natural dyeing but didn't know where to start? Then, this immersive retreat is for you! The retreat is held over a weekend beginning with an introductory presentation on Friday evening and concludes with a show and tell early Sunday afternoon. You will learn the chemistry of natural dyeing, the differences between different types of mordants, extracts, and raw dye stuff, as well as discovering the properties of different types of materials including cotton, wool, and silk. You will leave with a rainbow of colors, a detailed binder of information about each dye recipe used, and resources to continue your adventures in natural dyeing. The workshop requires two overnight stays, so you will get to experience the unique charm of Greencastle, and the incredible amenities this town has to offer including a nature park, a to die for bakery, and a variety of restaurants. Cost includes all materials.

Make a Book!

Bookbinding is a great way to personalize your journaling and sketching experience. Learn the basics of folded book and simple stitched techniques. No experience necessary, and ideal for beginners. Cost includes all materials.

Spin to Dye, Dye to Spin

Ideal for experienced spinners who want to experiment with dyeing both fleece and spun yarn. We will discuss the pros and cons of both processes, when to utilize each technique, and experiment with blending dyed fleece using hand carders. Acid dyes will be used to dye both fleece and yarn. Cost includes some sample materials, but participants are encouraged to bring their own fleece and yarn. No need to bring the dyes-we will supply those!
